Summary of Minutes from the CSSA Annual Board Meeting
January 19, 2024

Regretfully, the January 19th board meeting was held online rather than in person due to the
fires in Los Angeles. Tragically, our business manager Julie Taber lost her home in the fire,
The Huntington was closed, and most of us in Los Angeles were overwhelmed at the
losses.

Business Manager’s Report – Julie Taber

  • Membership stands at 2142. Non-renewals will be mailed a paper renewal form in February.
  • Convention attendance as of this date is under 200; measures were initiated to reach out through social media and hard mail.
  • New board member Kyle Williams will provide online genus descriptions for affiliates to use for Plant-of-the-Month competitions.

Treasurer’s Report – Nick Diomede

  • The CSSA financial position is strong with Show and Sale profits, Seed Depot revenue, and membership all contributing.

2025 Biennial Convention Report – Kelly Griffin

  • Progress in all aspects of preparation
  • Affiliates were encouraged to sponsor speakers and promote attendance. Some clubs offer a “scholarship” or lottery for one member to attend.
  • The 2027 Convention will be held in Tucson!


Seed Depot Proposal – Rod Haenni

  • After many years of obtaining succulent and cactus seeds from members, it was moved to purchase rare seeds and sell them online and during the show and sale and convention. 


Show & Sale Update – Nick Renteria

  • The 2025 Show & Sale will be held on June 27 – 29, 2025 at the Huntington.
  • Improvements will include Huntington Garden tours and speaker talks.


Conservation Committee – Irwin Lightstone

  • The CSSA funded 4 grant projects in Namibia, South Africa, and Mexico totaling $15,000.


Research Committee – Phuc Huynh

  • The Research Committee will increase their budget to $15,000 in hopes of attracting more comprehensive grant proposals.


Affiliate Committee – John Martinez


Election of Nominations Committee

The full board has elected the Nominations Committee for the fall 2025 elections, which will determine the Board Members for 2026. The committee includes Ann Hopkinson (Chair), Vonn Watkins, and Roxie Esterle. Affiliates are encouraged to submit nominations, including qualifications and contact information, to Ann Hopkinson.
