Education

The CSSA has been educating our members and the public on xerophytic plants, horticultural practices, and desert ecosystems for nearly 100 years. Only a tiny fraction of this work is represented on the web at this point, and new resources are always emerging. As we to strive to make information available, come back to this page to see what’s new!

Resources

Local Resources

Whether you’re a seasoned plant expert or a beginner, your local cactus and succulent society is one of the best resources available to you.

Local societies provide a community where plant enthusiasts come together to share their passion. They are a treasure trove of information and lasting friendships. Beginners can learn from seasoned growers, gaining insights into proper care, propagation techniques, and pest management. Experienced members, in turn, benefit from the enthusiasm and fresh perspectives brought by newcomers.

Local society activities typically include monthly meetings with a show-and-tell and a lecture or demonstration. They also put on horticultural “show and sale” events – exhibiting plants raised by local growers and selling plants to raise funds and educate the public. We encourage everyone to get involved in these in-person activities at the local level

Conservation: Avoid being part of the problem

By learning to identify endangered species and the warning signs a plant might be habitat collected, you can avoid being fooled when these are offered for sale.

Just remember, knowledge is only the first step. It’s still up to all of us to do the right thing when presented with an offer that seems “too good to be true”.
