Attending cactus and succulent shows and sales can be an exciting experience for plant enthusiasts. However, once you've made your purchases, the challenge of safely transporting your new plants home begins. Here are some tips and tricks to ensure your cacti and succulents arrive home in perfect condition.

Rod Haenni is the current President of CSSA. He has been growing  and propagating all types of cacti and succulents since 1978.  Cold tolerant succulents are a specialty and he enjoys the challenges of growing from seed.  Packing plants for safe transport became necessary as he frequently purchases succulents at sales around the USA.

Before Show Prep

Bring the Right Supplies
Before heading to the show, make sure you’re prepared with the necessary supplies. Here’s a list of items that can help you safely transport your plants:

  • Tongs or thick gloves for handling spiny cacti
  • Extra bag or cardboard box
  • Newspaper, paper lunch bags, or packing paper for cushioning
  • Plant tags or post-it notes for keeping plant names
  • Tape or a small stapler
  • Soft cloth or paper towels
