Affiliate Spotlight: Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society

Highlighting the good work of an East Coast club

🌵As part of our ongoing effort to celebrate and connect our affiliate clubs, we’re excited to share stories that highlight the amazing work happening in our communities. These features will showcase local clubs, recap events, and share special projects. Our first spotlight comes from the Northeast and the Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society (@ctcactussociety).🌵

The CCSS has turned their passion for succulents into a powerful act of generosity. What began as a simple idea last year has blossomed into a heartwarming tradition—raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital through a silent succulent auction.

It all started when longtime members Jack and Pepper Phillips hosted a CCSS monthly meeting at their home. They held a silent auction featuring specimen succulents from their personal collection, and other members joined in by donating plants. That first event raised $750, which Jack and Pepper generously matched—bringing the total to $1,500 for St. Jude’s, a cause deeply meaningful to them.

Building on that success, the Society expanded the effort in 2025. Once again, members came together, donating unique and beautiful plants for the auction. This year’s auction raised $1,043, which the Society matched, and Jack and Pepper once again doubled—bringing this year’s donation to an incredible $3,129.

👏 A big round of applause to CCSS for showing how our love for plants can truly make a difference!
