Dear CSSA Members,
The Cactus and Succulent Society of America (CSSA) partners with BioOne, a nonprofit publisher that provides global access to high-quality scientific research. CSSA posts all articles from Cactus and Succulent Journal and Haseltonia on BioOne’s platform, where they are available to researchers, libraries, and institutions around the world.
BioOne operates as a digital database that aggregates scholarly journals in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. Institutions such as universities, botanical gardens, and research libraries subscribe to BioOne Complete, which provides access to the full collection of journals on the platform—including CSSA publications—through a single annual subscription fee. This model increases the visibility, impact, and citation of our authors’ work while generating important revenue that supports our publishing program.
BioOne recently shared the following announcement regarding its Subscribe to Open (S2O) model:
We are thrilled to announce that the 2026 BioOne Subscribe to Open threshold has been reached. Thanks to the critical support of subscribing institutions worldwide, all 2026 content published in CSJournal and Haseltonia will be freely available (to researchers, libraries, and institutions) as Open Access. Read the announcement from BioOne.
This milestone represents a significant step forward in our commitment to making research accessible to everyone. Through the collective support of the global library community, we can now ensure that every article published in the CSJournal and Haseltonia during the 2026 volume year will be immediately available to readers worldwide—at no cost to authors.
What This Means:
- All research published in CSJournal and Haseltonia in 2026 will be Open Access
- Authors pay zero Article Processing Charges (APCs)
- Research reaches the widest possible audience
- Sustainable funding model supports the journal’s operations
This success demonstrates the power of community-supported publishing. We’re grateful to the libraries and institutions whose subscriptions to BioOne Complete made this possible, and to our authors and readers who continue to trust us with their research and their time.

Looking Ahead
The Subscribe to Open model requires annual renewal of institutional subscription support. To ensure 2027 content can also be made openly available, we encourage institutions to maintain their BioOne Complete subscriptions or start a new subscription. Libraries can contact Sales@BioOne.org to learn more.
Thank you for being part of this achievement. Together, we’re building a more accessible future for scholarly communication
The Subscribe to Open model allows current-year content to become openly accessible to readers worldwide when sufficient institutional support is maintained. This approach helps expand access to important botanical research while preserving a sustainable funding structure for nonprofit societies like CSSA.
We are proud that CSSA publications contribute to this global scholarly ecosystem, ensuring that research on cacti and succulents reaches scientists, conservationists, and enthusiasts everywhere.
Help us conserve xerophytic plants and desert ecosystems through your membership or an earmarked donation.
