About our Speaker

Dr. Lucas Majure is a botanist and plant evolutionary biologist originally from Mississippi. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in biology from Mississippi State University and completed his Ph.D. in botany at the University of Florida in 2012. As a plant systematist, Dr. Majure studies the evolution and diversification of plant biodiversity, with a particular focus on the Caribbean, Andean South America, and arid and montane ecosystems throughout the Americas. His research centers on major plant groups, including cacti—especially Opuntia and its relatives—as well as species in the families Melastomataceae (princess flowers), Poaceae (grasses), and Simaroubaceae (the tree of heaven family).

Cacti and the Caribbean

In this talk, Dr. Majure will explore the evolutionary relationships of Melocactus in the Caribbean, offering insights into their origins, dispersal patterns, and diversification across the islands. He will present hypotheses on the timing and mechanisms of their migration from continental America, as well as discuss what remains to be discovered about this fascinating genus throughout its range.
