About the Conservation Committee
The CSSA Conservation Committee is dedicated to the preservation and protection of cactus and succulent species around the world. Through collaboration with the CSSA Research Committee, conservation organizations, and local Affiliate Club partners, the committee supports initiatives that promote responsible stewardship, habitat protection, and scientific understanding of these plants.
The committee’s work includes funding conservation projects, raising awareness about threats such as habitat loss and illegal collection, and encouraging ethical practices within the hobby. By connecting the CSSA community with global conservation efforts, the committee plays an essential role in safeguarding these remarkable plants for future generations.
The Conservation Committee Members are:
Irwin Lightstone – CSSA Vice President and Conservation Committee Co-Chair
Buck Hemenway – Conservation Committee Co-Chair

Spring 2026 Conservation Forum

The recent CSSA Conservation Forum brought together experts, researchers, and enthusiasts for a meaningful exchange of ideas focused on the challenges and opportunities in plant conservation. The forum featured a range of presentations highlighting current research, in-situ conservation efforts, and strategies for protecting vulnerable species.
Participants had the opportunity to engage with speakers, ask questions, and explore how both organizations and individuals can contribute to conservation efforts. The event underscored the importance of collaboration and education in addressing the ongoing threats facing cacti and succulents in the wild.
The CSSA is grateful to all who participated and helped make the forum a valuable and inspiring experience.
